I saw another amazing show last night: Cesaria Evora with her nine-piece band from Cape Verde.
She may be a senior citizen but she can still put on a pretty incredible concert in our lovely
Alix Goolden Hall. You could almost feel the ocean breezes riffling through the moonlit palms, and when she sat down halfway through the set to have a cigarette, I started craving a cocktail.
Mae Moore and Lester Quitzau opened up, and it was great to see them looking so happy and relaxed and sounding so great as usual.
A few days earlier we were at the same hall for the Vienna Boys Choir. Wow! They did a solid two hours of intricate arrangements in several languages, including a little Abba, some Beatles and Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody". Some of them had bad coughs, and you could see they weren't feeling well, but that didn't affect the performance one bit. These people are pros. They did "Amazing Grace" for an encore, and the very nerdy page-turner got a chance to showcase his piano skills. He sat down at the keyboard and started throwing down bass runs and suddenly Elton John was in the house. That little choirboy was beaming from ear to ear when he took his bows...
