I wrote this song in about 20 minutes way back in 1974 while noodling on a dulcimer.
I had always entertained cowgirl fantasies since living in Calgary and spending time
in the beautiful foothill wilderness as a child.
It's a song about the bond between an outlaw and his horse, and it's been sung
around campfires in and around BC for going on thirty years now.
When I saw an incredibly fine musician, Fats Kaplin,
on tour with David Francey here in Victoria, I started to dream
that perhaps I could get him on the demo for this one some day. Well, it just so happened
that Fats was free the week I was in Nashville in October, so we lined up our schedules
and he came by the studio and did some lovely stuff.
My engineer Bill Renfrew is also a brilliant guitarist, so he filled in the spaces
with some high-strung guitar and baritone acoustic picking.
I still love performing this song, and I can usually claim that it's older than most of the people on stage at a writer's night... |
